i have been told i have a lot of these (some i think are actually rational). so i thought it would be a good idea for me to compile a list of them. you know, so you know the do's and don't's of being around me and my unfortunate temper.
here is a (non-comprehensive) list of some erc related triggers:
1. FREE PENNIES
take a penny leave a penny is for taking A penny. NOT taking all TWELVE pennies you need for your large coffee. even the three you take for your medium flavored latte irk me.
2. LINE JUMPERS
when i ask if i can get a drink started for you, you can just yell it to me. (this is the only time it is okay to yell at me). when you jump out of line, and walk up to the machine, you throw off the flow. NO ONE KNOWS WHO IS NEXT NOW. congratulations you just caused a clusterfuck at the register.
3. ORPHAN DISHES
do not leave your dirty dishes on any available counter area you see. there are two PROPER receptacles for them. (i.e. the bus tubs). the polite thing to do is to place your dishes in these, rather than NEXT to THESE, next to the microwave, by the blender, or behind the espresso machine. the first two will take me forever to get to. the latter I WILL NEVER SEE.
4. "THAT'S A SMALL??"
yes, our small is small. it sits at a stout 10 ounces. but let's be honest. it is not THAT SMALL. i cannot count the number of times a day i hear "whoa that IS small. give me a medium." THIS IS INSANE. THE CUP IS SITTING RIGHT THERE. YOU CAN SEE IT. I AM NOT SURPRISING YOU. and really i doubt you will notice the 2 ounces that differ between our beverages and the competition
5. SELF CUP GRABBERS
i understand that at times, my job seems easy. take your money, give you a cup, send you on down the counter to the coffees. BUT I STILL DO IT. I STILL DO GIVE YOU A CUP. i do not expect you to grab your own off the stack. we all know you will have waaay too much trouble deciphering which cup corresponds to the size you ordered. so rather than ASSUMING (which makes an ass out of u and i) that i am not going to hand you a cup and taking your own, WHY DON'T YOU LOOK AT THE GODDAMN COUNTER DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU WHERE I HAVE ALREADY PLACED YOUR CUP.
6. SMOOTHIES
also polar caps
7. CAN I HAVE LESS ICE THAN THAT??
sure, if you want a luke warm drink. there is a reason i fill the cup so full of ice. it is GOING TO MELT WHEN I ADD 200 DEGREE ESPRESSO TO IT. but hey, if you are into mediocrity in your drinks, then i can do whatever you want.
8. ICED DRINKS ORDERED WITH NO ICE
again, you are going to have a room temperature drink that cannot decide if it wants to be hot or cold. also, i will not fill your cup as full, because you are probably also trying to pull one over on me by getting MORE drink in your iceless cup.
9. NAPKINS?
what kind of fast/self service food service establishment does not offer napkins? look a bit harder. they are generally white and rectangular. and NOT located behind the counter. so you don't have to ask me if we have them or where they are. obviously we do, and they are right behind you.
10. THE UNDECIDEDS
when you guys all just mill about in the lobby, i cannot tell who is next in line. so when i say i can help whoever is ready to order, i am first and foremost trying to establish order and keep things moving. i am also operating under the (incorrect) assumption that if you then approach the counter, it means YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. and are therefore READY TO ORDER. if you place yourself ahead of the other undecideds, I DO NOT WANT TO WATCH YOU CONTINUE TO STARE AT THE MENU FOR 5 MINUTES. NOW, the others HAVE DECIDED and you are just holding up a rapidly forming line.
i guess i don't know if these are all considered "pet peeves" or not per se, but they sure as hell irritate me. and while we're on that subject... stop asking me if i punched your card, i DID. stop complaining about price increases, i DID NOT change them. stop asking about sandwiches. if you don't see them on the menu or ANYWHERE in the store, we probably do not have them. unless of course you say the magic password in which case we have a full secret deli you are entitled to.
"Full secret deli" Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteLine jumpers are my least favorite on this. I now just tell them to wait until we ring up the four people before them.
And self cup grabbers are pretty bad. I accidentally snapped at a lady today she said "What, oh, this is the medium? This is fine. I'll take a medium," and grabbed a LARGE CUP. I rage faced.
you forgot a few:
ReplyDelete11. the DEAF
not those that are actually deaf, but the mass amounts of people who absolutely REFUSE to listen when their drinks are called out.
example--
barista: medium latte! [sets medium latte down on counter, directly in front of customer, resumes making other drinks for the line of customers]
customer: excuse me. EXCUSE ME, is this a medium latte?
barista: [rage face]
ALSO, when customers assume the next drink to be set down is theirs. NO. you DID NOT order a small latte, you ordered a large mocha...with whip. does that small (please see #4) latte look like your large mocha??? NO. IT DOES NOT. DO NOT TAKE IT. DO NOT DRINK OUT OF IT AND THEN BLAME ME FOR MAKING THE WRONG DRINK. IT WAS NEVER YOURS AND NOW I HAVE TO REMAKE THAT DRINK. THANKS.
12. i can help you OVER HERE.
yes, we have two registers. am i standing behind the one you are trying to order from? NO. what makes you think second register is open? you watched me help several customers from the OTHER register. i am STILL standing behind that same register.
13. MUSIC
the employees of any establishment spend WAY MORE time in the given establishment than ANY customer possibly could. therefore, the employees get to choose the music. i am NOT sorry if it is not your taste. bring headphones or even earplugs if necessary. you came to a public place to do work. DO NOT expect this to be a quiet, studious environment. that is what libraries are for. i WILL NOT change the music. i will only PRETEND to turn the volume down. i HAVE to be here for 8 hours today, you chose to come here, so DEAL WITH IT.
aside from the music...NO, I CANNOT CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE. i understand it is too hot/cold in here, i cannot turn the heat/ac up/down. that is out of my control.
14. BABIES/CHILDREN
kids should not be consuming caffeine. why on EARTH do you think it is acceptable to bring them into a coffeeshop??? i understand if you need to run in, grab a cup of coffee and then leave. but to sit down and stay a while????? NO. YOUR CHILD SHOULD NOT BE FORCED (i guarantee they DO NOT want to be there) TO SIT IN A CAFE FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME.
THIS MADE ME LITERALLY LOL FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. SWEET B, PLZ START A BLOG. (not for just shoes).
ReplyDeleteThe "babies" one reminds me of my old job in Roscoe Village at a Starbucks. The Valium-ed out new yuppie moms would neglect their children while they chatted over coffee. I had to -several times- literally save a child's life, once while one was WALKING INTO THE STREET BECAUSE HIS MOTHER WAS IGNORING HIM ON THE PATIO (She then gave me attitude for saving her toddler's life because I touched him), and many other times had to run to close our basement stockroom door so kids didn't fall down the dark, crooked stairs. Also we daily had to nicely tell children not to swing from the rickety ass railings in our cafe and then glare at their parents. Bottom line is, if you can't do "kid things" with your kid, THEN WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE A KID?
ReplyDeleteNo I am not going back to edit this comment for grammar.
Oh. You guys forgot another one: the groups who, in their confusion of having to deal with more than one person at a time, will place ONE of their drink orders while the rest of them mill about, find seats, and yell vaguely about what they want, leaving you to try to guess how many drinks there actually are and what those drinks might be. It goes like this:
ReplyDeleteBARISTA: Hi, may I help you?
GROUP LEADER: Yeah, I'll have a large mocha, hey, Bill, what do you want?
(Bill is about 20 feet away)
GROUP LEADER: Well, Annie, what are you having?
(Annie is talking to Fred and ignores Group Leader)
BILL: I'll have a large *unintelligible* skim *unintelligible*
GROUP LEADER: What?
(Barista is nervously watching the growing line behind them)
GROUP LEADER: Okay, large mocha *Large mocha is already sitting in front of him, leaving the barista to decide whether this means TWO large mochas*, and, hey, Bill, what did you want again?
BILL: *unintelligible*
GROUP LEADER: Okay, large skim decaf sugar-free hazelnut and vanilla latte.
(The latte is made)
BILL: Oh, I wanted soy.
ANNIE: I'll just have a peach iced tea.

ReplyDeletei used to like orphan dishes when there were 2+ working. it meant i got to stare at people even more than i already did.
ReplyDeletehaha, i hated the deaf so much! but then there was that one girl that was actually deaf. that was shameful.
and i don't know who the other person is here, but orientation groups were really terrible to deal with.
ah, so many memories!
Update: Matt saw/heard the deaf girl speaking to someone today. PERHAPS SHE IS FAKE BLIND GUY'S FAKE DEAF COUNTERPART??
